The two crystal-clear lakes are surrounded by the large Monticolo forest. Monticolo is a fraction of the municipality of Appiano. From spring to late autumn, both lakes are popular excursion destinations. When they freeze over in winter, the lakes are often used as ice skating rinks. The large Monticolo lake is around 12 metres deep, while the small Monticolo lake reaches a depth of 15 metres.
